Neat Foods Develops New Egg Replacement

Today, neat® foods announced the launch of a new all-natural, vegan egg replacement called “the neat egg™” derived from chia and garbanzo beans. Hitting the shelves in fall-2014, the shelf stable egg replacement will be available nationwide online (http://www.eatneat.com) and in select grocery stores throughout the country.

"We’re excited to be able to provide consumers with an egg replacement free of chemicals and other artificial fillers. We identified this opportunity simply by listening to the needs of our customers. An all-natural egg replacement with clean and simple ingredients has been one of the most requested items from the consumers we meet during in-store product demonstrations, as well as buyers representing our distributor and retail partners,” says neat® Vice President of Sales and Distribution, Gavin Mutter. “There is an egg or vegan egg step included within our current preparation instructions to make neat® meat substitutes. We started using ground chia exclusively, but soon discovered the addition of garbanzo beans aided in the leavening process, allowing baked goods and other foods to rise. The neat egg™ did very well in at-home consumer concept testing. We believe it will fill a need for the broader market.”

The product and packaging will be officially unveiled for the first time at the Natural Products Expo East Show in Baltimore, MD, September 18, 19, and 20. The neat egg™ is available in a 4.5 ounce pouch and makes the equivalent of 18 eggs. Home consumers add 2 tablespoons of water to 1 tablespoon of the neat egg™ mix to yield 1 egg. The product will retail between $5.99 and $6.99 – making it a viable replacement in family friendly recipes like pancakes, cookies, cakes, breads, and other baked and prepared foods. The neat egg™ was developed for use in recipes where eggs are binders and leavening agents, not as a stand-alone edible egg.

The neat egg™ is the latest in the company's line of meat replacement mixes launched in 2013, which include Original, Italian, Mexican, and a Breakfast sausage flavor. New in 2014, neat's meat replacement mixes are also now available in the foodservice channel to accommodate restaurants looking to offer tastier vegetarian and vegan dining options to their patrons. The company is also developing a line of frozen “neatballs™,” which are expected to launch at retail stores in 2015.
