Matador Capital Management, a Latin America-focused long/short equity investment manager, and Ranger Capital Group, a holding company for registered investment advisers, have entered into a strategic relationship. Ranger Capital Group, with $3.3 billion under management, will provide infrastructure, marketing and consulting services to Matador’s successful long/short equity strategy, and together with Pedro Zevallos, Matador’s founder and portfolio manager, will initiate a new long-only Latin American investment strategy based off Matador’s successful long performance.

Matador was founded by Pedro Zevallos who launched the firm’s Latin American hedged-equity strategy in November 2011. Prior to founding Matador, Mr. Zevallos, a native of Peru, worked at Maverick Capital for nine years, seven of which he was solely responsible for the firm’s Latin American efforts. Prior to Maverick Capital, Mr. Zevallos served as a research analyst at J.P. Morgan Fleming Asset Management, Inc. Mr. Zevallos has also worked in Spain and Portugal as a research analyst for major financial firms. Regarding the new arrangement, Mr. Zevallos said, “We are excited to enter into a strategic relationship with Ranger Capital Group as they have a proven expertise and successful track record in building firms and launching new products. This alliance is highly complementary to both sides. On one hand, it represents a new international product offering to Ranger investors and on the other hand, it opens the door to expanding Matador’s investment team. Our investment philosophy and approach at Matador Capital will remain exactly the same, and our new relationship with Ranger will allow us to focus even more intently on executing our Latin America investment strategies.”

Ranger Capital Group was formed in 2001 and its affiliated investment advisers currently manage $3.3 billion in assets on behalf of institutional investors. Scott Canon, president and CEO of Ranger Capital Group, said “Matador was a perfect match for us. Like our other managers, they take a fundamental, bottom-up approach. They not only have a successful track record, but they have performed with low volatility and returns uncorrelated with the broad U.S. stock market. Like Matador, we believe investment opportunities in Latin America are enormous.”
