Miracle Recreation Will Donate New Playground to Staten Island Neighborhood as Hurricane Sandy Anniversary Approaches
Staten Island, NY (PRWEB) September 16, 2014 -- As the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy approaches, Miracle Recreation – one of the nation’s leading designers and builders of innovative playgrounds – will donate a brand-new, state-of-the-art playground to the Staten Island neighborhood of Midland Beach. Midland Beach was severely battered by Hurricane Sandy which destroyed one of the neighborhood’s few recreation areas. Midland Playground has been closed since the storm, leaving families and children with one less destination for safe, active play.
Miracle Recreation has built a brand-new playground to open on Monday, September 22, helping to restore outdoor recreation to families and children in Midland Beach.
The September 22 ribbon cutting will be a joint effort with NBA Cares – the National Basketball Association’s global social responsibility program – which is providing new basketball courts alongside the playground. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will be present, along with a group of players from the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks teams. Jim Zelter, CEO and Director of Apollo Investment Corporation, Playpower’s parent company, will represent Apollo, Playpower and Miracle Recreation Equipment Company at the ribbon cutting ceremony. Also in attendance will be New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, officials from the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, and dozens of Midland Beach youngsters.
Like many coastal areas, Midland Beach is still recovering from the devastating storm. The hurricane destroyed the playground’s infrastructure, ripped up safety surfacing, submerged the area in several feet of water and littered the grounds with debris. Ever since, the play area has been closed to the public. The adjacent basketball courts – also a community fixture – were damaged by the storm, as well.
“It’s our goal to provide Midland Beach with a state-of-the-art destination for families and children, and to help the community recover from a destructive storm,” said Joe Copeland, CEO of PlayPower, parent company to Miracle Recreation. “The new, custom designed playground provides a unique outdoor entertainment space for children in the area and we hope it will help the neighborhood move beyond Hurricane Sandy’s disastrous effects.”
This isn’t the first time that Miracle Recreation has donated a playground to a community in need. Earlier this year, the company donated an inclusive playground to the city of White House, TN, to honor brothers Cayden and Conner Long.
Donating to communities in need is an important part of fulfilling the brand’s mission to deliver thrilling, fun play to children and communities where it is missing. Through its innovative playground designs, Miracle Recreation strives to bring exciting, age appropriate challenges to children of all ages and abilities.
