1Heart Caregiver Services Training Director Randolph Neil conducted in-service training for most staff of Regency Park Oak Knoll during the assisted living national week, in collaboration with their Executive Director Gladys Broxton. This continuing professional education program is both the advocacy and initiative of 1Heart Shirley Billedo and Regency Park officers of the community, Wellness Director Ana Artiga, Marketing Director Jeanine Hernandez and Activities Coordinator Alfonso Escalante.
1Heart and Regency Park are both in agreement to a well-crafted continuing professional development that delivers benefit to individual, their profession and the senior residents. The learning objectives that were presented by Randolph are ‘to unleash potential of each employee in order to increase and maximize productivity to help put company mission to action’ and ‘to institutionalize continuing professional development to help provide excellent and compassionate care to residents’. Initial feedback revealed a positive response from attendees and the processes and methodology discussed will be very useful in their field of work.
In recent years, there has been increased recognition of the mistreatment of residents in assisted living facilities as an important healthcare issue, as reported by Nursing Home Abuse Center. There has been limited research about the prevalence of abuse in facilities for several reasons. Among the reasons why incidents of abuse go unreported are: embarrassment or fear of reporting by those who have been subject to it, the frailty of the resident and lack of physical means to report the abuse.
Abuse encompasses five categories of harm: physical, psychological, sexual abuse, financial exploitation and neglect that cause bed sores. These abuses may cause permanent disability and even death. Many of these statistics and deficiencies were articulated by Elder law Attorney and Gerontologist Susan Geffen, author of the book titled ‘Take that nursing home and SHOVE IT!’.
