PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, is a destructive force on the lives of those who live with it. Clinicians in the field have found using calming music, such as our own Merrill Collins’ compositions, has a healing effect on those who are suffering. Used in conjunction with solid medical and psychological process, it helps clinicians sooth their patients and work on their problems.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) interventions are becoming an increasingly popular treatment among returning vets and pre-discharged service people (whom may have or showing signs of PTSD). According to a recent survey completed by IAVA members, 47 percent of respondents said they know at least one veteran who has attempted suicide, while 40 percent of respondents said they know someone who has died by suicide.
“This stat is very disheartening and maybe if active duty service people used our music before they are welcomed home, we can help calm some of their war pains,” said Merrill Collins, the creator of “Blossoms” calming music, recently re-released. (spiralingmusic.com/calm). Todd Brazee is a Licensed Counselor and Integrative Healer, who has specialized in treating some PTSD trauma individuals. It’s in the nature of his “Integrative Trauma Therapy” work where Blossoms music is helping them release their memories of emotional pain. “I am using Merrill’s music to help my patients heal and integrate, making her music an important part of my practice.”
Remember that all complementary interventions should only be used as a supplement to a well throughout conventional treatment. Serviceperson should discuss all complementary therapies they are trying with their physician to see if it could interfere with conventional treatments.
“Merrill Collins' music eases the mind and being into a state of peace where healing can occur.” Michael R. Irwin, M.D., David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
