On 8/26/14 Vein Specialists of Arizona became the first practice in western United States to perform the Varithena procedure on two of their patients to treat venous reflux disease. Varithena was recently approved as a cutting edge technique to treat varicose veins caused by problems with the great saphenous system. Varithena improves symptoms and the appearance of varicose veins as well as prevents further progression and potential complications which venous disease may cause.

The first patient was a 49 year old female and the second was a 67 year old female, both suffering from significant symptomatic venous reflux. Both patients were done in the office, without any incisions and were able to drive themselves home when the procedure was completed. There were no side effects or complications.

Varithena® is a uniform, low-nitrogen, polidocanol microfoam, dispensed from a proprietary canister device. The physician injects a small amount of Varithena® into the malfunctioning vein through a small tube (catheter) or a needle. It displaces the blood from the vein to reach and treat the vein wall; the diseased vein collapses and blood flow is diverted to healthy veins nearby.

Vein specialists practicing in the US who are interested in using Varithena® can connect with a BTG Territory Sales Manager by calling the Varithena Solutions Centerâ„¢ at 855-971-VEIN (8346). To learn more about Varithena®, go to http://www.varithena.com.
