Robotic surgery provides an excellent means to fully remove the cancer and thus cure the patient, in a less invasive approach, leading to a quicker recovery, shorter hospitalization, and less blood loss.
Jersey City, NJ (PRWEB) September 18, 2014
CarePoint Health is proud to announce that the first prostatectomy (the removal of a cancerous prostate, along with the adjacent glands) in the State of New Jersey using the new da Vinci robotic Xi platform was performed at Christ Hospital on September 8, 2014. The surgery was performed by Dr. Mutahar Ahmed and Dr. Yale Shulman and was supported by a specialized team of nurses and anesthesiologists, specifically trained for robotic procedures. The robot assisted prostatectomy is another first for CarePoint Health, where the use of the da Vinci Si and Xi robot platforms are revolutionizing health care.
“The patient is recovering well,” reports Dr. Shulman, “and the outcome of the surgery was excellent, with no bleeding, a return of Gastro-Intestinal function and no fever.” He added, “Robotic surgery provides an excellent means to fully remove the cancer and thus cure the patient, in a less invasive approach, leading to a quicker recovery, shorter hospitalization, and less blood loss.”
The robot assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy was performed through several half-inch incisions and ports through which robotic instruments and a stereoscopic camera were placed. The prostate was carefully dissected free from surrounding structures and removed. The nerves involved in sexual function were spared and preserved. The bladder was then anastomosed to the urethra. The use of the da Vinci Xi enabled the dissection and anastomosis to be performed under direct vision with heretofore unavailable magnification. Early discharge from the hospital and early catheter removal are routine under these conditions.
CarePoint Health hospitals now offer both the daVinci Si and Xi platforms utilizing multiple-port access and/or single-site access. Additional advanced technology includes FireFly viewing, which offers selective identification of anatomic structures and pin point localization of some diseases. The use of the da Vinci robot provides a safe and effective operative intervention using the latest technology. Due to the precision in technique possible with use of 3D high-definition vision and cutting edge robotic tools, there is reduced chance of complications. Because surgeries using the da Vinci robot are conducted through minimally invasive incisions, recovery time is dramatically improved, post-operative pain is lessened and patients spend less time in the hospital. The benefits to patients are clear: early recovery and early return to daily activity, less bleeding, low rate of wound infection and high patient satisfaction.
