Western Texas College Begins Fall Sports Season
Snyder, TX (PRWEB) September 21, 2014 -- The Western Texas College Westerners fall sports teams are on the pitch, on the course and on the court.
Cross Country- Coach James Williams is leading the men's and women's Cross Country teams. Upcoming regional meets at the end of October will determine what student athletes will qualify for nationals. On the WTC women's team Camira Haughton from Jamaica and Corena Harrington from Hawkens, Texas have high hopes of reaching the national meet while Antonio Davila of Laredo, Texas and Rajay Hamilton from Jamaica will be striving to be national qualifiers.
Volleyball - The WTC volleyball team is competing against top ranked and high caliber teams. A young team in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, WTC has two players among the nations leaders. Lupita Quintanilla of Plainview, Texas is currently 6th in the nation in hits and kills. Vanessa Salazaar of Edinburgh, Texas is 8th in the nation in digs.
Soccer - The WTC women's soccer team has a new coach. Fanta Cooper came from the New Mexico Military Institute. This exciting young team is led by Sarah Cenary from Turks/Cacos and Marta Orta of El Paso, TX.
On the men's side, Coach Shawn Uhlenhake's team is led by Gafar Dauda of Houston, TX, Kayode George from Houston, TX and Jerome Bland of London, England.
WTC Athletic Director Tammy Davis is proud of the success WTC student athletes have enjoyed. "Our coaches do a great job of working to get kids graduated. We've been able to graduate over 65% of our students and our placement of graduating sophomores at 4-year schools has been excellent."
"We are 11th in the nation among Division 1 Junior Colleges in overall athletic team success. Based on National appearances in games, meets and individual events."
