While automotive booster cables (also called “jumper cables”) and lead-acid jump starters are effective, they also pose significant consumer safety risks. Booster Cable Technology
Booster cables have long been the go-to essential for motorists, frequently found in vehicles and in roadside emergency kits. Though booster cables are inexpensive, they are also inconvenient and risk-prone. Most booster cables on the market today contain no safety functionality, so proper use is critical. This includes clear identification of the positive and negative terminals. Accidental battery connection in reverse order or battery clamp collision can cause sparks. Jump starting also requires an additional vehicle, which may require interactions with strangers or hours of waiting for assistance. These risks and downsides make many motorists reluctant to use booster cables altogether.
Lead-Acid Jump-Starter Technology
A popular alternative to booster cables, until today, has been lead-acid jump starters. These devices solve some of the problems associated with booster cables. The main advantage is their ability to start a vehicle without the assistance of another. However, lead-acid jump starters pose the same safety risks as booster cables, with no short-circuit or reverse polarity protection. Although lead-acid jump starters offer additional benefits to booster cables, they also present additional drawbacks.
Lead-acid jump starters contain a lead-acid battery, which makes them large and heavy – with some up to 40 pounds in weight. As a result, not all motorists can use these devices effectively or conveniently store them inside their vehicle. Most often, motorists store lead-acid jump starters in their homes and garages, notably limiting device usefulness. Lead-acid jump starters also have a high self-discharge rate of approximately 5 to 20 percent per month, potentially discharging in full within a month. Consequently, lead-acid jump starters may not provide the charge necessary when the motorist needs it. Damage to lead-acid batteries when left uncharged can be permanent, with conditions like sulfation and acid stratification reducing its life capacity. The only way to avoid these conditions is to keep the jump starter charged permanently, which most motorists never do.
Genius Boost Technology
The beauty and simplicity of Genius Boost lies in its internal lithium-ion battery, which can last up to one full year when left uncharged without suffering long-term damage.
