Mashable Announces Expansion into UK with London Office
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 23, 2014 -- Mashable, the leading media company for the Connected Generation and the voice of digital culture, today announced it will officially be opening its London office in October with the hiring of Blathnaid Healy as its UK Editor, Tim Chester as Deputy Editor, and Ben Maher as its Advertising Director, expanding its global footprint to the UK.
London and the UK are Mashable's second largest audiences by city and country, and represent strategic growth opportunities for the company. Year-over-year the site’s London audience has grown by over 47 percent, while its traffic figures in the entire UK have increased by 42 percent according to Adobe Marketing Cloud.
"As media and technology continue to shape the international landscape, it only makes sense that Mashable expands in order to continue to thrive within the intersection of these spaces," said Pete Cashmore, Founder and CEO of Mashable. “With an already strong international readership, we at Mashable are excited to continue growing our team in London.”
In her role as UK Editor, Healy will be responsible for building, leading and growing Mashable’s editorial operation in the UK. Both Healy and Chester, as Deputy Editor, will be integral members of the Mashable editorial team, helping oversee the brand’s around-the-clock news coverage and reporting on news topics of particular interest to readers in the UK and Europe as a whole.
“The launch of editorial operations in London is a big moment for Mashable,” said Jim Roberts, Chief Content Officer and Executive Editor of Mashable. “With Blathnaid and Tim leading the way, we can create for the UK audience a custom version of Mashable’s unique coverage of global news, technology reports and the latest on digital culture.”
Prior to joining Mashable, Healy directed editorial operations and led content and community development at WorldIrish.com as Chief Operations Officer in 2013 and Community Manager in 2012. From 2007 to 2011, she served as a multimedia news journalist for Ireland’s largest media organization, RTÉ (Radio Teilifis Eireann), where she reported on global news and produced content covering topics such as technology and food security in developing countries across the outlet’s digital and social platforms.
Over the course of her career, Healy has reported in the U.S., Ireland, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Romania. She is a graduate of University College Dublin and Northwestern University, where she completed her Masters of Science in Journalism.
Working alongside Healy on Mashable’s editorial team in London will be Tim Chester, Deputy UK Editor. Chester joins Mashable from Rough Guides, where he helped relaunch the travel website as senior web editor. He was also a contributing editor for BuzzFeed UK.
Chester has a deep background in covering film, music, tech and general features, having contributed to The Sunday Times, GQ, The Guardian and others. He began his career at the music publication NME in 2005, before moving to become an editor on NME.COM between 2008 and 2012. Chester is a graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London, where he studied English literature.
Joining Healy and Chester will be Ben Maher as its UK Advertising Director who joins the company from Weve, a joint venture between the UK’s three largest mobile network operators, which develops mobile commerce platforms businesses in the UK, where he served as an Agency Director.
“Mashable’s expanded presence in London will allow us to better serve our international advertisers by offering them tailored solutions for a more authentic Mashable experience,” said Seth Rogin, Chief Revenue Office of Mashable. “Ben brings a wealth of experience to Mashable and we’re confident he’s a great fit as we look to help our partners better communicate with Mashable’s influential UK audience.”
Maher brings over a decade of digital and mobile sales experience in the UK and EMEA markets, working with a host of world-class brands. Prior to Weve, Maher served as Commercial Director and Founder of his own gaming start up and also worked as an EU Sales Director for AdMonsters before that. He has also worked in various capacities for Jaman, Endemol International, MySpace, AOL Time Warner and Yahoo!.
Maher, Healy (@blathnaidhealy) and Chester (@timchester) will officially join Mashable and launch the London bureau in October 2014.
