United Network Equipment Dealers Association (UNEDA) Endorses YODA
Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 24, 2014 -- The United Network Equipment Dealer Association (UNEDA) strongly defends the principle of the You Own Devices Act (YODA); a bill before the house which seeks to uphold consumers' right to resell products. On September 18th, 2014 U.S. House of Representatives member, Blake Farenthold (R-TX), announced The You Own Devices Act - or YODA for short - arguing for customer's rights to resell their owned products and the software contained on them.
Farenthold stated, “As we move closer to the Internet of Things (IoT), where more and more of our household items include software and are connected to the Internet, it is critical that we don’t allow this software which otherwise enhances our experience to fundamentally alter the concept of ownership. That is why I introduced the You Own Devices Act – or YODA. YODA would simply state that if you want to sell, lease, or give away your device, the software that enables it to work is transferred along with it, and that any right you have to security and bug fixing of that software is transferred as well.”
Lyle Gore, President of UNEDA’s Board of Directors, has stated it thusly, “if YODA is ratified, it will ensure the right to use any software running on a product, that is essential to the operation of the product, is passed along to the next user without encumbrances from the original manufacture.”
UNEDA believes that Rep Farenthold and the members of congress who support of this bill will surely feel pressure from the manufacturers trying to infringe upon consumers' rights to use with what have been called bogus copyright claims. Please join in mounting the pressure in support of YODA by contacting members of congress to outline the importance of YODA to organizations and tweeting Rep. Farenthold @Farenthold (hashtags #youowndevicesact, #yodabill, #resellrights) in support of his action on the issue.
