“Hopefully you’re familiar with the basic shuffle pattern”, says Johnson. Claude demonstrates a basic shuffle pattern as follows; 5th fret of the 6th string with first finger and 7th fret of the 5th string with 3rd finger, played twice as 1/8th notes, followed by 9th fret of the 5th string with 4th finger, played twice as 1/8th notes, and alternating between the 7th and 9th frets.
Claude demonstrates a riff that you can add to the shuffle to give it some flavor that is composed of minor third double stops on the 3rd and 2nd strings. Claude demonstrates the riff as follows; 8th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger and 7th fret of the 2nd string with 2nd finger and slide this double stop up one half step repetitively counted as triplets for three beats followed by an easy lick based in Am (A minor) pentatonic that consists of the 7th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger and then a pull-off to the 5th fret with first finger and then a hammer-on to the 7th fret of the 4th string with 3rd finger and then back into the shuffle rhythm.
Johnson continues this easy beginner blues guitar lesson by performing several variations on the riff and using different techniques such as hybrid picking. Guitar TAB’s are available for this cool guitar lesson at GuitarControl.com.
