By taking the pledge, a huge cross-section of people can stand up for something that is affecting us all.

As Election Day 2014 approaches, the nonpartisan Americans for Internet Freedom will be contacting senators, representatives, state legislators, journalists, tech companies, and others who value a free and open Internet to take a pledge supporting Internet freedom.
The AIF believes Internet freedom is as American as any other freedom enjoyed in the United States. Revelations about U.S. domestic surveillance have continued to surface, and American citizens have become increasingly resistant to laws and regulations that threaten individual privacy. The Nov. 4 day of voting can serve as a reminder to Americans and their elected officials that citizens shouldn’t have to give up privacy and freedom in order to be safe from terrorism, a belief that a January USA Today/Pew Research poll said Americans agree with by a 3-to-1 margin.
The pledge — “I support Internet freedom. I will promote policies that encourage innovation. I will oppose laws and regulations that limit free speech. And I will resist laws and regulations that threaten individual privacy.” — will be managed through SmartCrowdz.
“The core American principle of freedom is one that U.S. citizens hold dear, and we believe the principle should also be applied to the Internet, a major force in our economic growth,” said Randy Smith, a tech entrepreneur who co-founded AIF with business partner Mike Lanese.
“There are intrusive programs out there — including some that are well-intentioned — that are threatening individual privacy, hampering free speech and constraining innovation online,” Lanese said. “By taking the pledge, a huge cross-section of people can stand up for something that is affecting us all.”
