Alaska may become the first red state with full marijuana legalization thanks to Alaska Marijuana Legalization, Ballot Measure 2 which allows adults 21 years old and above to possess an ounce of marijuana and six plants. A recent poll by the Alaska House Majority Caucus showed 52 percent of residents support the initiative.
Florida is also voting on Florida Amendment 2, Use of Marijuana for Certain Medical Conditions, this November, as a very limited medical marijuana law was passed earlier this year. The existing law is so limited that Florida is not yet considered as a medical marijuana state. This initiative aims to use marijuana to treat debilitating medical conditions such as cancer, HIV, AIDS, hepatitis C, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and ALS. A poll conducted by the Marijuana Policy Project showed support from 70 percent of the residents.
Oklahoma is still in the process of gathering signatures, but will likely be on the ballot this year. According to the latest SonnerPoll results 71 percent of the residents support the legalization of marijuana.
Oregon is voting for recreational legalization, which will allow adults 21 years of age and above to possess eight ounces of marijuana and maintain four plants. A poll by SurveyUSA showed that 51 percent of the residents support this measure.
In North Carolina governor Pat McCrory recently signed a CBD-only medical marijuana law, so full medical legalization may be months away. A Tar Heel State poll showed that 76 percent of residents support medical cannabis.
The District of Columbia Council may have decriminalized marijuana earlier this year, but supporters argued that the measure did not go far enough. Initiative 71 will allow adults 21 years old and above to possess up to two ounces of marijuana and six plants, as well as gift others with marijuana. A Washington Post poll showed that nearly two-to-one of the DC residents favored this measure.
U.S. territory Guam is voting on legalizing marijuana to treat serious medical conditions such as cancer, glaucoma, PTSD, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, HIV, and arthritis. A survey by the University of Guam showed that 62 percent of residents support this initiative.
Federal law still prohibits marijuana, however, all the initiatives only affect state laws.
