Dr. Edward Buckingham Approved to be Fellowship Director for Facial Plastic Surgery
Austin, TX (PRWEB) September 30, 2014 -- Edward D. Buckingham, M.D., owner of the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, has been approved to be a director of a fellowship for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) fellowship program. The announcement came last week from the AAFPRS during their meeting in Orlando, Florida.
The Educational and Research Foundation for the AAFPRS fellowship program is respected throughout the medical community. It represents the finest postgraduate program in the world for the training of facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Each year, eligible physicians may apply for more than 40 positions. Dr. Buckingham completed a fellowship in 2003 and now he will begin annually training a surgeon wishing to advance their skills in facial plastic surgery.
Founded in 1969, the fellowship program has prepared over 900 specialized physicians in becoming educators and leaders in facial and reconstructive surgery. Those in the fellowship have aided the AAFRPS foundation over the years through the development and dissemination of new procedures, improvement of patient care, refinement of surgical techniques and the promotion of confidence and respect in the specialty.
In addition to Dr. Buckingham’s acceptance to be a fellowship director, he received an award during last week’s meeting for scoring the second highest score in the nation on the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) examination. Also, during the meeting the election results for the Academy were announced and Dr. Buckingham was elected to the nominating committee for the AAFPRS.
The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) requires cosmetic surgeons take the exam every 10 years. The MOC examination was designed to encourage plastic surgeons to participate on a regular basis in continuing medical education, remain current in critical knowledge areas and perform at a continually high standard in their surgical practices. The exam is also intended to ensure surgeons remain up-to-date with the latest advancements in their surgical field.
Dr. Buckingham specializes exclusively in facial plastic surgery including the latest in endoscopic techniques. He is known for his extensive expertise in both cosmetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery in Austin. He is double board certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. These certifications have provided Dr. Buckingham with a unique understanding of the anatomy and aesthetics of the face.
Graduating in the top 2 percent of his medical school class at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Dr. Buckingham received the Donald Duncan Memorial Scholarship in Anatomy, the Edward Randall Medal for Academic Excellence and the Merck Manual Award. Following his residency, he completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Albany Medical Center and the New England Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center in Albany, New York.
Dr. Buckingham has earned a national reputation for his work as he has authored numerous publications and is a frequent presenter about Otolaryngology and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
