(PRWEB) September 29, 2014 -- NJ Top Docs Presents, Dr. Jan Huston!
Dr. Jan Huston is Medical Director of the Breast Health Program at HackensackUMC Mountainside in Montclair, NJ, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease. When she is not in the operating room, Dr. Huston curates a blog of daily “kernels” of information dedicated to breast cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment. Her dedication to providing each patient with an individual game plan for optimal breast health and a compassionate experience is evident in her writing.
This informative blog resides at http://www.TheKernelOfTruth.org, where Dr. Huston stresses the biggest kernel of truth: “Mammograms can often find a ‘kernel’ of cancer before you could feel a lump. Having regular mammograms can increase survival from breast cancer.” In addition, the blog features a daily “Today’s Kernel” in which a fact is displayed largely on the homepage. Today’s kernel is: “1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, but the survival rate for women who detect it early is over 90%.”
The Kernel of Truth’s blog archive dates back to September of 2013, in which a wide range of topics pertaining to breast cancer are covered. In a year of blog posts; Dr .Huston answers commonly asked questions, tells the amazing story of a breast cancer survivor, debunks common myths, and speaks on the latest developments in breast cancer treatment.
In a recent blog post, Dr. Huston talks about the recent study that links birth control to an increased risk of breast cancer. She starts by stating the alarming statistics: “The study includes 23, 052 women between ages 20 and 49, 1102 of whom were diagnosed with breast cancer. Women on high-dose estrogen pills (sold as Continuin or Femulen) and moderate-dose pills (sold as Ortho 75) were 2.7 and 1.6 times more likely to develop breast cancer. Those on low-estrogen pills had no increased risk.” Most news articles would focus on these alarming rates without considering the readers and their anxieties. However, Dr. Huston puts the reader at ease by telling the other side of the story. She doesn’t tell readers not to take caution, but she does tell readers to consider a list of positives before tossing the pills. For example, below are some of Dr. Huston’s bulleted points:
- “The high-dose pills are rarely prescribed. There is no increased risk with low-dose pills.
- The elevated risk was only seen in women who had taken high and moderate-dose pills within one year. Their risk returned to normal one year after stopping birth control pills.
- Breast cancer is really rare. A women’s risk of developing breast cancer at 40 is 1.5% and only 2.38% at age 50. Increasing those numbers by a factor of 1.6-2.7 causes only a slight increase in overall risk.
- …All medicines carry a risk, even Aspirin! For the vast majority of women the benefit of the pill far outweighs any risk”
Dr. Huston is able to shine a light on the positive side, without amplifying all of the negatives, causing widespread fear and anxiety. With the training, skills, and experience gained over the span of more than twenty five years, Dr. Huston is often being recognized for her excellence and compassion for her patients. As the recipient of numerous awards and much recognition from her peers, including being a Medical Honoree for the Susan G. Komen Pink Tie Fundraiser in 2009, Dr. Huston has been written up on numerous occasions in many publications such as NJ Top Docs.
The Kernel of Truth blog is certainly one to follow. For the woman with a family history of breast cancer, the woman with little to no knowledge on breast care, the man who’s looking out for his loved ones, or the man who’s interested in learning about breast cancer in males, this blog should be marked on everyone’s “Favorites” tab.
“HackensackUMC is a wonderful place to be a doctor and a patient. Everything needed for state of the art diagnosis and treatment of breast problems and specifically breast cancer can be found under a single kind, calm, caring roof,” says Dr. Huston.
