Caitlin Doughty, Author of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Discusses Getting People Involved in Death Rituals & the Beauty of a Dead Body on Maria Menounos' Book Circle Online
(PRWEB) September 30, 2014 -- Caitlin Doughty is a licensed mortician and the creator/host of the “Ask a Mortician” web series. She founded the death acceptance collective The Order of the Good Death and co-founded Death Salon. Her book is called, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, and she came and sat with host Jeff Masters on Maria Menounos' online broadcast network Book Circle Online to promote it.
On getting more people involved:
"I try to get more people involved, because it's incredibly powerful. It's an honor for me to put the person into the flames, but I don't know the person...I think more people should be involved with the cremation and the burial.
On the beauty of a dead body:
"Dead bodies can be really beautiful. Yes, scarey if you're not used to them, but the longer that you're with them, especially if it's someone that you love - the shell of someone that you love - the more comfortable that you will be."
On the gruesome details in the book:
"I made a very specific decision not to pull any punches with the descriptions. The death industry is known for using euphemisms, which are a little unhealthy, and I'd rather go a little too far in the slightly gruesome direction."
The word: Corpse:
"I love the word, 'corpse'."
