Deadly Cancer Gets Media Coverage on Awareness Day
Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) September 30, 2014 -- On September 26th, Mesothelioma Awareness Day, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) and its volunteers obtained media coverage of mesothelioma, its treatment, and the dire need of research. Several media outlets reported on this neglected but extremely dangerous cancer.
On its website, the Meso Foundation lists the interviews.
In several interviews, Mary Hesdorffer, the nurse practitioner and executive director of the Meso Foundation, served as an expert interviewee on nearly twenty television and radio stations. Mary spoke about mesothelioma and explained the role of clinical trials as part of a patient’s treatment, given that currently there is only one FDA-approved treatment with limited effectiveness.
“Today, the focus is on clinical trials and trying to get patients involved in as many clinical trials as possible, because that’s really how you make progress,” said Ms. Hesdorffer.
Other interviews featured Meso Foundation volunteers and community members.

Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the lining of the lung, abdomen, or heart known to be caused by exposure to asbestos. Medical experts consider it one of the most aggressive and deadly of all cancers. An estimated one-third of those who develop mesothelioma were exposed while serving in the Navy or working in shipyards.
ABOUT THE MESOTHELIOMA APPLIED RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The Meso Foundation is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating mesothelioma and easing the suffering caused by this cancer. The Meso Foundation actively seeks philanthropic support to fund peer-reviewed mesothelioma research; provide patient support services and education; and advocate Congress for increased federal funding for mesothelioma research. The Meso Foundation is the only non-government funder of peer reviewed scientific research to establish effective treatments for mesothelioma and, ultimately, a cure for this extremely aggressive cancer.
