Florida Hospital is Recruiting Soldiers for the Pink Army to Declare War on Breast Cancer
(PRWEB) October 01, 2014 -- October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and Florida Hospital is creating awareness about early detection and prevention by recruiting soldiers across Tampa Bay to join the Pink Army and declare war on breast cancer. Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, exceeded only by lung cancer according to the American Cancer Society. While one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, the survival rates are encouraging and continue to increase due to early detection.
According to Dr. Ronald Prati, Florida Hospital Tampa Diagnostic Imaging Medical Director, early detection can be one of the most critical factors in reducing breast cancer deaths. “Mammograms are able to catch breast cancer before it’s progressed to a stage that is big enough to feel,” says Dr. Prati.
The Florida Hospital Pink Army is a statewide initiative that began in 2010 to increase community awareness about early detection and prevention of breast cancer. Today, there are nearly 42,000 soldiers across the state of Florida. The purpose is simple: enlist, get screened and donate. One hundred percent of the proceeds donated through the Pink Army initiative go to the Florida Hospital Breast Care Fund, which provides free breast imaging diagnostic exams and cancer treatment to women in need. Every Pink Army solider earns rewards for completing missions that start from the time of enlistment. Each mission that a Pink Army soldier embarks on helps save lives and soldiers earn prizes while advancing in rank. Soldiers go from Private to General by attending events, scheduling a mammogram and helping to educate women about the importance of screening mammograms.
Lauren Key, Vice President of Marketing for Florida Hospital West Florida Region, describes this annual campaign as inspiring. “Our Pink Army touches thousands of women and men of all ages and backgrounds and unites them in a common cause, to fight breast cancer. The real heroes in the Pink Army are the women who have survived breast cancer and continue to be an inspiration by sharing their stories, encouraging women to get mammograms, donating their time by volunteering and recruiting new soldiers.”
