Kiwi Mums Launch Unique Gift Book Through Kickstarter

Three Auckland mothers have just launched a Kickstarter campaign to publish a unique collection of folklore, customs, and pearls of wisdom about mothers and babies from around the world.

Called “Little Gems”, the first edition of this stylishly illustrated gift book is being funded by the crowd-sourcing website Kickstarter.

Authors Jane Langley and Bridget Fogarty, friends since the age of five, had babies at the same time and got talking about the different ways other cultures navigated the emotional rollercoaster of pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting.

Their research revealed a gap in the market for a book that brought together all the most interesting ideas on baby-wrangling from around the world. A lot of books for new mothers are very prescriptive and leave women feeling like they’re not ‘doing it right’. This led to “Little Gems” – a celebration of motherhood from around the world and in history.

"Little Gems" is intended to be a gift book for new mothers, bringing together mothers’ wisdom from over 50 different cultures around the world and in history – ranging from 14th century Jewish philosophers to Guatemala, Medieval England to Japan. Each ‘gem’ is fascinating, hilarious, and ultimately reassuring.

Every page is hand illustrated by artist and designer (and fellow mother) Becky Ollivier, and the result is a unique coffee table book that is as beautiful to look at, as it is to read.

The campaign on Kickstarter runs until October 22.
