Milwaukee builder’s local project wins in Government/Public Buildings category

“One of the things we are most proud of is that this project was built without lost time incidents and injuries,” said Gilbane Project Manager Nate Gebert.

The downtown Milwaukee office of Gilbane Building Company was recently bestowed with Engineering News-Record Midwest’s Best Project of the Year in the category of Government/Public Buildings for its work on the Waukesha County Health and Human Services Building.

Gilbane provided construction management services for the new 136,500 square foot building that houses several county public service departments. The new facility replaced the more than 100-year-old Health and Human Services Center and the Public Health Center. It was designed in close collaboration with Zimmerman Architectural Studios through an Integrated Design Process utilizing LEED® Green Building Guidelines. The new buildings lighting beats the industry standard by 20 percent and now has only 1/3 of the utility costs of the previous building. Additionally, the project team’s dedication to safety resulted in an incident and injury free workplace for the duration of the project’s more than 171,000 man hours.

Dennis Cerreta, Architectural Services Manager for Waukesha County Health and Human Services, is extremely happy with the project, commenting, “It was an excellent project and experience with Gilbane. The best project team I have had the pleasure to work with!”

“One of the things we are most proud of is that this project was built without lost time incidents and injuries,” said Gilbane Project Manager Nate Gebert. “Safety was a high priority from the start. We held weekly safety meetings and developed a detailed safety plan that was followed throughout the project,” added Gebert.

A panel of six industry professionals awarded top honors for ENR Midwest's Best Projects 2014 competition, an annual program recognizing outstanding design and construction in a variety of categories. Panelists selected winning projects on the basis of quality, innovation, safety and the ability of their project teams to overcome unique challenges.
