Shmoop University (http://www.shmoop.com), a digital curriculum company aimed to make learning fun and accessible, has been granted a-g certification for its Common Core-aligned 9th-grade English Language Arts Online Course; the course will now be honored as part of the requirements for admission into the University of California system. To earn certification, a course is required to meet iNACOL’s National Standards for Quality Online Courses, proving it to be a valuable course for students nationwide.

This particular course introduces students to literature, walking them through grammar, essay writing, and the basics of literature before diving into poetry, novels, drama, non-fiction, and bestsellers. Its tagline—“Reading, Writing, and an obvious lack of Arithmetic”—showcases Shmoop’s student-friendly style, which, combined with the rigor necessary to meet a-g standards, makes for a fun and in-depth course that teachers and parents will be thrilled to oversee.

Elizabeth Jones, Lead Curriculum Editor at Shmoop, remarks, “Shmoop aims to please students and teachers alike, and the a-g certification is an official reminder that learning doesn’t have to be blah; courses like Shmoop’s Introduction to Literature can engage students while still meeting the rigorous college readiness standards expected by California’s higher education system.”

Shmoop’s full course catalog includes Common Core-aligned courses in all subjects, including a full suite of Core ELA and Math courses for grades 9-12, along with special interest courses like Pop Culture Literacy and an entire course devoted to Bruce Springsteen.

Early next year, Shmoop plans to submit for a-g certification a variety of courses in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and History.
