US Federal and State governments and utilities are driving microgrid development.

Infocast, the leading business intelligence and networking events producer in microgrids, has announced the 5th Military & Commercial Microgrids Summit, scheduled November 19-21, 2014 at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar in California.

In a recent article, Forbes described the reliability of microgrids as priceless because they are a detachable source of power which continues to run and supply power once central power plants and large grids have stopped working. With extreme weather events wreaking havoc in the Northeast, it seems the business case to implement microgrids has been made.

The North American microgrid market is primed to take off to an estimated $26 billion (B)/5.9 gigawatts (GW) annually, with the United States government as the primary driver for this development. With over 40 military bases currently utilizing microgrid technologies and over 600 forward operating bases in need of energy security, the U.S. Department of Defense is ready to invest. On the civilian side, the U.S. Department of Energy is currently offering a Funding Opportunity Announcement for microgrid projects in the 1-10 megawatts (MW) range and will soon be awarding up to $1.2 million (M) per project to 6 winners.

Infocast has organized the 5th Military & Commercial Microgrids Summit as the only event to address microgrids in the military and commercial markets. The summit will bring key microgrid decision makers and new potential end-users together to share their business and technical wants, needs and requirements for new projects. Early adopters and implementers of microgrids in defense applications, critical infrastructure, campus/institutional, remote communities and utilities will also be on hand to share lessons learned and real world case studies of microgrid performance. Additionally, attendees will have the option to attend an exclusive tour of the UCSD 42 MW Microgrid led by Byron Washom on the evening of November 19th.
