Abt Continues Evaluation of Effort to End Chronic Homelessness in Los Angeles
Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) October 07, 2014 -- Preventing and ending long-term homelessness in Los Angeles County, which has one of the largest homeless populations in the nation, is a top priority of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Abt Associates will continue its work to evaluate and inform the Foundation’s Chronic Homelessness Initiative under a new $700,000 two-year contract.
Since 2011, Abt Associates has been evaluating and sharing learnings from the Foundation’s initiative aimed at:
• Facilitating systems change among public, private, nonprofit, and philanthropic stakeholders to enable the development of more permanent supportive housing;
• Strengthening target programs, pilots, and providers through funding for projects that encourage coordination, alignment, innovation, and efficiency within the supportive housing system, including efforts to prioritize the most needy and costly individuals for permanent supportive housing resources; and
• Developing and disseminating research, evaluation, and data systems that help maximize the effectiveness of permanent supportive housing.
“We look forward to bringing the best available evidence to deliver insights that will advance the Foundation’s efforts to prevent and end homelessness in Los Angeles,” said Mary Joel Holin, vice president of Abt’s Social and Economic Policy Division.
Abt Associates’ Brooke Spellman, a national leader in conducting research and developing strategies to improve policy and programmatic responses to homelessness and poverty, will continue to serve as the project’s principal investigator.
Separately, Abt is working with the Conrad. N. Hilton Foundation to evaluate a project aimed at substance use prevention and intervention in youth.

About the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation
The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation was created in 1944 by international business pioneer Conrad N. Hilton, who founded Hilton Hotels and left his fortune to help the world’s disadvantaged and vulnerable people. The Foundation currently conducts strategic initiatives in six priority areas: providing safe water, ending chronic homelessness, preventing substance abuse, helping children affected by HIV and AIDS, supporting transition-age youth in foster care, and extending Conrad Hilton’s support for the work of Catholic Sisters. In addition, following selection by an independent international jury, the Foundation annually awards the $1.5 million Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize to a nonprofit organization doing extraordinary work to reduce human suffering. From its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 billion in grants, distributing $92 million in the U.S. and around the world in 2013. The Foundation’s current assets are approximately $2.4 billion. For more information, please visit: http://www.hiltonfoundation.org.
