New Nightstick® True-UV Flashlight line starts at $23; UV LED at 365 nm, not Just Blue
Wylie, TX (PRWEB) October 09, 2014 -- Bayco Products, Inc. debuts two remarkable small and economical lights that offer true UV (ultraviolet) illumination at 365 nanometers (nm) and run from standard alkaline AA or AAA cells. The Nightstick MTU-106 (average retail $23) is in a standard pocket penlight form factor and runs for 45 minutes on 2 AAA cells. The Nightstick MTU-136 Gooseneck (average retail $28) runs for 75 minutes on 2 AA cells; its emitter and reflector head connect to its body with a skinny articulating gooseneck and a removable magnet gives it the flexibility to anchor the body then position the head for hands-free UV illumination.
Some small lights that claim to provide ultraviolet illumination are actually deep blue, barely skimming into UV’s longest and least useful wavelengths. The shorter 365 nm wavelength of these new Nightstick lights is well into the defined UV-A band and as such can provide interesting and useful effects.
These lights can make microorganisms (many viral, bacterial or fungal strains) glow and because such biologicals fluoresce under UV A lighting they can help users identify incomplete cleaning in bathrooms, for example, or around the office or on a school doorknob. They can help identify incomplete cleaning of restaurant menus, plates or utensils or within hotel room facilities. Minerals and some gems fluoresce under UV A illumination as to many small animals like scorpions. UV-A responsive areas in currency and credentials can help detect counterfeits. Cracks in glass that are difficult to detect under visible light become easier to see under UV.
The emitters on these lights is officially a UVED (ultraviolet emitting diode), a close cousin to visible-light LEDs, and has a life expectancy of 50,000 hours.
