Leading cougar dating site, MyCougarDates.com, has revealed that it saw a 139% increase in signups in September, with a staggering 24,294 people joining the site. The site put the increase down to increased interest from mature women whose teenage children had recently returned to school in early September.
A spokesman for My Cougar Dates explained, ‘there has been an explosion in older women joining the site in recent weeks, beyond anything we had ever anticipated. Perhaps with kids returning to school they have more time and feel that they deserve some fun after the summer holidays! We’re delighted that the cougar dating category seems to have moved on from being a small niche to a big mainstream dating sector. We’ve always had a lot of younger guys joining looking for a ‘Mrs Robinson’, but we’re now seeing so many more women in their 40s and 50s actively seeking younger men.
Perhaps the most intriguing stat released by the site was that the older women on the site get the most attention, with women between 51 and 60 receiving 4 times as many winks as women under 50. This is particularly surprising given that 63% of men that join the site are aged 18-25 years. This suggests that the average age gap between members is around 35 years.
The good news for these young suitors is that only 7.35% of women noted down on their dating profiles that they are married, which makes things far less complicated, presumably.
MyCougarDates recently went to great lengths to clarify that it also welcomes mature men, stating that ‘although cougar dating is assumed to only be open to younger guys, we still welcome older men, and they do sometimes prove popular with female members who like to mix and match!’’
The concept of mature women dating younger men gained mainstream acceptance following the cult status achieved by the ‘Samantha’ character in Sex in the City, an older woman who regularly seduced younger men in the show. The most famous celebrity cougar-cub couple, Demi Moore and Ahston Kutcher, transfixed news and gossip sites during their tumultuous relationship but did prove that love knows no age, despite their relationship ending after seven years together.
