Cleveland's Luxury Resort, The 9, Launches Artist-in-Residence Program
(PRWEB) October 13, 2014 -- The 9 is pleased to announce Michelle Murphy as the first artist to be featured in the urban resort's artist-in-residence program. Murphy’s interactive installation "Getting Happy," will reside outside the Alex Theater for the next four months. The 9’s artist-in-residence program brings emerging and established local artists to the resort, inviting them to use space for creative production and exhibition of their work. The 9’s gallery artists were debuted in October, featuring sky paintings by Jessica Newell and photography by Herb Ascherman.
“The 9’s art program enhances the experience of its guests by going beyond the use of stock photos on its walls. Although there are many beautiful painting and prints throughout the 9, “it has built an art program that every guest – from the least observant eye to the most cultured critic – can touch, feel, hear and experience,” said Murphy.
"Getting Happy" is interactive art where Murphy is both the performer and installer in a glass studio or public laboratory. She will create a lighting studio environment then photograph and videotape visitors giving each other hi-fives, smiling exercises and making party favors come to life. This footage is then looped into a video that she will have on display. As her artwork builds, more party favors and imagery will be exhibited in the gallery space at The 9.
“In ‘Getting Happy,’ the process of creating the artwork becomes part of the final exhibited work. An audience is imperative as they become both the model and the viewer of the performance photo and video series,” explained Murphy.
Whether guests are sipping cocktails at Ledger Bar, or viewing a show at Alex Theater, The 9 hopes to satisfy cultural sensibilities and promote a greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of art and music not commonly found in hotels around the world.
