Claude starts off by demonstrating a blues shuffle in the key of B as follows: 7th fret of the 6th string with first finger and 9th fret of the 5th string with 2nd finger, strummed twice as 1/8 notes (1 &) and then switches the note of the 5th string to the 11th fret with 4th finger and strums it twice, also as 1/8th notes (2 &) and then repeats the whole sequence to make one measure of four beats (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &). Next Johnson improvises some bluesy licks based in the minor pentatonic scale, demonstrated as follows; 7th fret of the 6th string with first finger to the 10th fret with 4th finger to the 7th fret of the 5th string with first finger to the 9th fret with 3rd finger and then repeat that sequence for strings four and three and then 7th fret of the 2nd string with first finger to the 10th fret with 4th finger and then repeat that sequence for the first string. Claude makes the licks resolve on the 3rd of the scale rather than the root and says “if you get lost you can always revert back into the arpeggio to find your way back”.
