Hospitalito Atitilán on Lake Atitilán, Guatemala Announces Schedule for CME Course to Enhance Physician Communication with Spanish-Speaking Patients & Their Families
New York, NY (PRWEB) October 21, 2014 -- Hospitalito Atitlán on Lake Atitlán, Guatemala — named one of the world’s most beautiful lakes by Fodor’s and CNN, among others — is the site for a Medical Spanish and Cultural Immersion Continuing Medical Education (CME) course that helps medical professionals improve their communication with Spanish-speaking patients and their families. The CME course has been approved for a maximum of 25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ by Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Attendees enhance their medical practice by learning medical Spanish, while also experiencing the cultural richness and physical beauty of the Lake Atitlán area. Some stay on after the course as medical volunteers.

Small classes of six participants/session receive one-on-one training from instructors knowledgeable in medical terminology and the Spanish language. The program also includes rotating lectures by Hospitalito faculty on relevant topics such as Western versus traditional medicine and the issue of exploitation of women in Guatemala.
Attendees are introduced to Maya culture through a viewing a documentary film, taking a walking tour through the village of Santiago Atitlán and visiting the homes of cottage industry weavers under the auspices of the Cojolya Asociación of Maya Women Weavers.
The CME sessions run seven times a year.

About the Hospitalito
The 25,000 square-foot Hospitalito Atitlán serves the healthcare needs of the local community, made up of 75,000 indigenous Mayas. The Hospitalito is the site of surgical jornadas (medical trips) in various fields including cleft palate birth defects, OB/GYN, ophthalmology and urology. It’s in the third year of a diabetes prevention and treatment initiative funded by the World Diabetes Foundation, headquartered in Denmark.
The Hospitalito has had a relationship with the University of Pennsylvania since 2005 through the Guatemala Health Initiative (GHI), which was founded by students and faculty at the Schools of Medicine and Nursing.
Hospitalito Atitlán is a small private nonprofit hospital serving 75,000 Maya living on the southern shore of beautiful Lake Atitlán in the Guatemalan highlands.
