Families receive crash course in the perils of distracted driving at behind-the-wheel event in Atlanta

Educating families about the perils of distracted driving couldn’t be a more important topic right now, as we head into the busy holiday season,” said Jeff Payne, founder and CEO of Driver’s Edge

Straight Talk Wireless, the leading US no-contract cell phone service provider, and Driver’s Edge, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching young drivers what is not being taught in traditional driver’s education, held a behind-the-wheel event this past weekend in Atlanta, GA to honor National Teen Driver Safety Week. The event is part of Straight Talk’s ongoing Safe Driver Initiative, which recently reported that parents are texting while driving more than teenagers (33 percent vs. 24 percent) – and these new drivers (80 percent) view their parents as the most important influence on their driving habits.

The Safe Driver event provided a one-of-a-kind experience that tested the driving skills of teens and parents with and without distractions such as texts and phone calls to calculate their personal “Distraction Score.” The course was aided by the help of Straight Talk’s Safe Driver Car Connection, a device that blocks incoming calls and texts while the car is in motion.

“Educating families about the perils of distracted driving couldn’t be a more important topic right now, as we head into the busy holiday season,” said Jeff Payne, founder and CEO of Driver’s Edge. “We hope that our event has helped to spark this crucial conversation among families and encouraged them to put the phone down while driving.”

The safe-driving course simulated the dangers of texting and driving, testing drivers on a number of exercises including lane position changes, proper turning, emergency braking and more while trying to navigate obstacles in the course. Driver’s Edge instructors and the Georgia State Patrol were also on hand to provide tips and must-haves to prevent distracted driving.

The Straight Talk Safe Driver Car Connection is available exclusively at Walmart and online at Walmart.com and StraightTalk.com at a suggested retail price (MSRP) of $139.88.
