Upper Nyack, NY (PRWEB) October 15, 2014 -- Non-profit healthcare patient and physician organizations representing approximately 100 million people will attend the Global Healthy Living Foundation’s free dhAdvocacy social media summit October 20 in Washington, D.C.
dhAdvocacy, known as the objective digital health advocacy voice because it is not organized by a healthcare company, will be held at FHI 360 at 1815 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC, and will also be broadcast live over the dhAdvocacy.org website with four-time Emmy winner talk show host and news anchor Jan Fox as dhAdvocacy broadcast anchor.
This will be the fourth year the Global Healthy Living Foundation has hosted the social media summit, last year bringing together 1,300 healthcare non-profits representing nearly 100 million patients, physicians and other healthcare professionals.
This year’s topics include biosimilars, one of the next advances in injectable and infusible drugs for diseases ranging from cancer to arthritis, psoriasis and Crohn’s disease; privacy; net neutrality, and challenges for non-profits with Facebook’s policies. Biosimilars promise to dramatically lower costs for biologic drugs.
The summit’s keynote speaker, Marvin Ammori, has been a key player in defending network neutrality. Best known for his work opposing the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), Mr. Ammori is a thought leader in Internet law, “a prominent First Amendment lawyer and Internet policy expert,” according to Time Magazine. Recently, his digital campaign around network neutrality resulted in the crashing of the FCC’s public comment portal after a record 3 million submissions were received. Mr. Ammori will share his experiences building widespread public interest campaigns on the Internet and offer best practices using the Internet to raise awareness and mobilize advocates around complex issues.
In addition to the keynote, the half-day summit includes:
Paul Bove, social media lead, U.S. Food and Drug Administration who will share a panel with Cecilia Arradaza, managing director, communication and policy at FasterCures to discuss social media’s role in awareness, structure, privacy and participation in medical research.
Michael Ricci, deputy director of communications for Speaker of the House John Boehner, will talk about how to engage elected officials and their staff using social media.
Cody Damon, president of Media Cause’s Boston office, a non-profit digital agency, will talk about understanding and interpreting social media analytics.
A pre-summit Social Media 101 breakfast workshop from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., tailored for social media beginners, will be taught by Amanda Phraner, vice president of digital health at Edelman.
Facebook’s algorithm that creates challenges for non-profit organizations to reach followers will also be discussed at the summit. GHLF’s CreakyJoints arthritis group has collected 18,000 signatures on its change.org petition (https://www.change.org/p/keep-facebook-free-for-non-profits) to ask Facebook to stop severely restricting non-profit posts unless they pay to promote them. Facebook made nearly $3 billion in pre-tax profit in the third quarter this year.
