“I want to show you a couple of basic chords that you can use for blues and rock that will come in really handy when learning songs and creating your own stuff,” says Johnson. Claude starts off by demonstrating a power chord as follows; 7th fret of the 5th string with first finger and 9th fret of the 5th string with 3rd finger and you can also add the 9th fret of the 3rd string with your 4th finger. The power chord is a movable shape and is easily combined with the pentatonic scale. Next Claude demonstrates the Dominate 7th chord as follows; first finger barred across all of the strings at the 5th fret and 7th fret of the 5th string with 3rd finger. This is also a movable shape and works well with the minor pentatonic scale. Next Johnson demonstrates a different voicing for the 7th chord as follows; 7th fret of the 5th string with 2nd finger, 6th fret of the 4th string with first finger and 7th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger. “This is a great chord for the blues,” says Johnson. Claude continues by adding his 4th finger the 7th fret of the 2nd string which makes the chord a 9th chord, which was used by Jimi Hendrix a lot. Johnson continues this easy guitar lesson by playing different examples of these chord voicing’s in the context of a chord progression.
