Insurance.com Offers Tips for Putting a Car Away for the Winter
Foster City, Calif. (PRWEB) October 20, 2014 -- During the fall and winter, many people who live in the Snowbelt put cars in storage and may want to cancel car insurance on vehicles they’re not driving. However, owners need to be aware of several stipulations that must be met in order to take their cars off the road, according to Des Toups, managing editor of Insurance.com, a car insurance comparison-shopping website.
“Taking a car off your policy isn’t as simple as parking it and calling the insurance company,” said Toups.
• Lenders will require that owners keep collision and comprehensive coverage on vehicles that are financed or leased.
• Almost all states require that vehicles with an active registration maintain at least state-minimum levels of liability insurance. Owners may be required to turn in the license plates or sign an affidavit of non-use if liability coverage is removed.
• Owners may need to move the vehicle off a public road.
“Ask your insurance company about your options before you drop everything. Many have discounts for people who may be parking their vehicles for a while, whether due to weather or extended trips overseas,” said Toups.
Toups recommended maintaining at least comprehensive-only or storage insurance during the winter months, which keeps a car protected in case of a collapse caused by a snow-burdened roof, for instance, usually for $200 or less a year.
He also said speaking with an insurance agent to go over various situations, which Insurance.com offers via its call center staffed with agents licensed in all 50 states, is often the easiest way to clarify complex car-insurance questions.
