“This video is about hybrid picking,” says Johnson. “Basically, I will be using my pick as well as my fingers”. Claude demonstrates the technique in the key of B flat by playing licks based in the minor pentatonic scale. Claude performs a hybrid picking lick as follows; 7th fret of the 3rd string with first finger, played with a pick, and does a hammer-on to the 10th fret with 3rd finger and then the 11th fret of the 2nd string, picked with 2nd finger of right hand. Johnson continues by playing several variations on this concept of combining picking with a pick and fingers. “This is an easy way to build up speed,” says Johnson. Hybrid Picking is a technique where the guitarist uses a flat pick with the thumb and first finger and finger picks with the remaining fingers. Double Stops is the technique of playing two strings at the same time, usually done using the hybrid picking technique.
The Pentatonic Scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave. They can be found all over the world and are the main scale used in the Blues genre.
