Ser Familia announces new and expanded services
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) October 20, 2014 -- Ser Familia, Inc. proudly announces new and expanded services beginning this month in Cobb County, Georgia.
Thanks to a grant from the "Promoting Safe and Stable Families" program and the support of United Way, Dow Chemicals and Cobb EMC, Ser Familia has opened a new office located in Marietta, Georgia. From this office the organization will start offering bilingual mental health services, a critical need in this county. With a population of more than 89,000 Latinos, Cobb County has only four bilingual mental health professionals.
“The opportunity of having a bilingual mental health therapist has been a longtime goal for Ser Familia. For many years we have had the frustration of being empty-handed when a person, couple or family needed more intensive support than the one we could offer through our regular programs, and we had nowhere to refer them,“ said Belisa Urbina, Executive Director of Ser Familia, Inc.
The other project that will benefit from this new funding is the Strengthening Families 10-14 Program. The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program. SFP is an evidence-based family skills training program found to significantly reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. Child maltreatment also decreases as parents strengthen bonds with their children and learn more effective parenting skills. Ser Familia, Inc. has been successfully implementing this program in Spanish for the past three (3) years in the state of Georgia, and has graduated more than 250 families from it.
