Thomas Page McBee, Author of Man Alive, Discusses His Transition and Newfound Privileges of Being Male on Maria Menounos’ Book Circle Online
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 22, 2014 -- Thomas Page McBee is the author of Man Alive: A True Story of Violence, Forgigeness, and Becoming a Man. He came and sat down with Jeffrey Masters on Maria Menounos’ online broadcast network, Book Circle Online, to discuss his new book.
On male privilege and benefiting from sexism McBee says, “I'm given more privilege every single day. People pay more attention to what I have to say because I'm a man. Sexism exists and I'm experiencing the benefits of having a male body.”
He also says that in discovering how to be a man he found, “A lot of men don't really feel comfortable with masculinity. I think it's a really restrictive gender.”
On young men starting to realize they have a gender, McBee says, “If you're a guy, you might not even realize that being a guy is a gender, and I think younger men, specifically because of feminism on college campuses and that sort of thing are much more in tune to the reality that the choices they make have an affect on other people.”
On his transition from male to female being a transition into adulthood: McBee says, “In my experience transitioning wasn't so much about transitioning into being a man from being female. It was about transitioning into adulthood from being a younger person.” He says, “There is not one aspect of being trans that doesn't exist in every other part of life. I wanted people to see that this was a universal experience, transitioning from anything to anything is normal.”
