Indianapolis Organization Tangram Supports Students Seeking Employment this Disability Employment Awareness Month
Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) October 24, 2014 -- October is Disability Employment Awareness Month, and latest unemployment numbers tell us that the national unemployment rate for individuals with a disability is close to double the rate of individuals without a disability.
To Scott McGuire, a graduating senior at the University of Indianapolis with severe dyslexia, these numbers hit closer to home. McGuire is looking forward to finding a job and living on his own after graduation, but now the same disability that made school a challenge may keep him from getting being employed. Thankfully, the solution to his employment may come from the same place as his academic success.
McGuire has found help through a life coach, Megan, who works with him through Tangram, a local organization committed to supporting individuals with disabilities. Megan understands his individual goals and has helped him develop individualized plans to meet his goals and take on his future. McGuire describes Megan as someone who partners with him and helps him find strategies to be successful academically and in other areas of life.
“She’s helped me with diet, health, academics and setting goals. She helps me do want I need to have an independent and happy life,” McGuire says.
Steve O’Dore, the head of Tangram’s life coaching program, says Tangram’s program helps fill in the gaps for students with disabilities so they can be successful and independent after they’re finished with school. Tangram life coaches are available to students like Scott through a grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. The grant funded services for 5 high school students and 5 middle school students in the Indianapolis area.
McGuire knows that finding a job after graduation will not be easy, but with Megan’s help, he’s taking steps now to ensure his transition is successful.
