“Just as someone with a heart condition should seek consultation from a medical professional before starting an aggressive exercise program, it is important to call an addiction center or your doctor first before attempting to treat your own illness.

Deborah Graves Feigel, PA-C, addiction physician assistant at Florida addiction treatment center Lakeview Health, recently commended cbsnews.com series “#14days on the wagon” (http://www.cbsnews.com/elp/14-days/) for putting chemical dependency in the national spotlight. The series set out to increase awareness about addiction and generate support for those struggling with this life-threatening disease. Experts interviewed discussed topics such as motivation, nutrition, family recovery, and the healthy lifestyle choices that support recovery.

“In recent years we have come far in raising awareness and recognizing addiction as a disease rather than a moral failing,” Feigel explained. “By removing the shame and focusing on solidarity with those afflicted, we make it easier for people to be open to seeking treatment.”

Friends and families of those currently in recovery are encouraged to take part in the 14-day challenge and abstain from alcohol, tobacco or illicit drugs in support of loved ones. Those who are in potential need of treatment for chemical dependency are advised to seek a professional assessment before attempting stopping “cold turkey” as withdrawal symptoms may become severe or potentially life threatening.

“Just as someone with a heart condition should seek consultation from a medical professional before starting an aggressive exercise program, it is important to call an addiction center or your doctor first before attempting to treat your own illness,” continued Feigel. “It can actually be dangerous, in some cases, if not monitored correctly.”
