Claude starts off this jazz guitar lesson by performing the riff from Satin Doll so you can hear how it should sound. The song is based on the two five one chord progression in the key of C. The chords in the progression are as follows; the two chord is Dm7 (D minor seven), the five chord is G7 and the one chord is CM7 (C major seven). Claude demonstrates how to the play the chords as follows; Dm7; 10th fret of the 6th string with thumb and 10th fret of the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings with first finger, G7; 10th fret of the 5th string with 3rd finger, 9th fret of the 4th string with 2nd finger, 3rd string open and 7th fret of the 2nd string with first finger and CM7; 8th fret of the 6th string with first finger and simultaneously mute the 5th string, 9th fret of the 4th string with 3rd finger, 9th fret of the 3rd string with 4th finger, 8th fret of the 2nd string with 2nd finger and simultaneously mute the first string. Johnson demonstrates a melody based on notes from the chord voicing’s between the chord changes that give the song its distinct sound.
