Dr. Connie Casad to Become IFM-Certified Practicioner
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) October 28, 2014 -- Dr. Connie Casad, a Dallas, Texas gynecologist and bio-identical hormone specialist, has taken a step closer to becoming an Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) Certified Practitioner with the completion of their premier course, Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice.
IFM Certification’s goal is to deepen and broaden the expertise and knowledge base of clinicians in the principles and practice of functional medicine. Recognizing that her patients wanted and needed natural hormones to make them feel better, Dr. Casad began an intensive education program of self-study on bio-identical hormone replacement therapies before there was a certification program. For the past nine years, her patients have benefited from her continued training and now she can become certified.
Dr. Casad explained, “Functional medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention and treatment of complex, chronic disease. This is a type of medicine that shifts the focus of traditional disease-centered care to patient function-centered care which is designed to address root cause. This is much like looking under the hood of your car and discerning from where the rattle is coming and addressing that directly rather than just putting earplugs in your ears so you can no longer hear the sound of the rattle.”
Dr. Casad shared the importance of incorporating functional medicine into her practice for her patients.
“Today, we are faced with a growing incidence of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, mental disorders and autoimmune illnesses like never before seen,” she said. “Our health care system is designed toward the management of acute care – trauma, heart attacks, appendicitis – short-term problems in need of urgent care. This does not translate well into prevention and management of complex, chronic disease. What applying functional medicine in clinical practice does is to enable a patient-centered partnership with the physician to promote health beyond just the absence of disease. We look further upstream to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology and lifestyle that can lead to illness. Certification in functional medicine confirms we have advanced our knowledge and can apply what we know with confidence with our patients.”
As an IFM Certified Practitioner, Dr. Casad will be certified in the use of patient-centered diagnosis and applying the concepts of antecedents, triggers and mediators in assessment and workup; adept in the use of the Functional Medicine Matrix Model and systems thinking; proficient in the workup of patients who present with complex chronic disease; skilled and competent in the treatment of patients with complex chronic disease using diet, lifestyle, nutrient, phytonutrient, mind/body and pharmaceutical modalities; and skilled and competent in evaluating and planning primary and secondary preventive interventions using diet, lifestyle, nutrient, phytonutrient, mind/body and pharmaceutical modalities.
Dr. Casad concluded, “In utilizing the functional approach, the practitioner incorporates both Western medicine practices with that of what is called ‘alternative’ or ‘integrated’ medicine to fully treat the patient from the root cause to wellness.”
