Portion control systems are becoming a popular method of losing weight, according to physicians of Ace Medical Weight Loss Center. They emphasize that portion control should be designed for real kitchens and real people, which would increase adherence to weight loss plans.

A better designed portion control system will increase adherence to a weight loss plan.

One of the common complaints about portion-control systems for weight loss is the quality of material used. Plates are often plastic and forks are often flimsy.

When Drs. Sandeep Grewal and Myo Nwe of the Ace Medical Weight Loss Center designed their "SlimPlate System," they specifically sought to bring a higher level of quality to every aspect.

“We absolutely wanted to maintain a dining experience,” Nwe explains. “When someone sits down to a meal with their family, they don’t want to feel like an outsider on a special diet at their own dinner table.”

The SlimPlate System includes 4 lunch/dinner plates, a breakfast plate, a cereal or soup bowl, and a snack platter. Each was carefully designed, according to Dr. Grewal, to reflect an appropriate portion for items like proteins, starches or vegetables.

“The portion lines are color-coded and discreet,” Dr. Nwe says, “intended to have a simple yet tastefulness design that can fit anywhere.”

Dr. Nwe and Dr. Grewal are each practicing internal medicine specialists in the Carolinas, and co-founders of South Carolina’s Ace Medical Weight Loss Center in Rock Hill.

Reviewers and users of their system have routinely pointed out the high quality. “These are proper dishes,” one blog reviewer writes, “more like china than chinette - and they feel sturdy and well made.”

The positive response the system has received was encouraging to Drs. Grewal and Nwe, who say they knew functionality would be a crucial issue.

“They were made to work in a real kitchen,” Grewal points out, “with real dishwashers, real microwaves and real kids. They had to stand up to that test.”

The system also includes beverage holders, a portion cutter for items that won’t fit on a standard plate, and a nutritional program that progresses along with the user.

“It’s a lot easier to reach your goal,” Nwe writes, “when you can see it right in front of you.
