Common Sense Education Wins Inaugural 2014 Digital Innovation in Learning Award from Digital Promise and EdSurge
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 31, 2014 -- Common Sense Education, the education arm of Common Sense, the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families and schools thrive with media and technology, has been selected as one of the winners of the 2014 Digital Innovation in Learning awards. As winner in the Better Together category, Common Sense Education is honored for its support of Los Angeles Unified School District's ongoing efforts to teach digital literacy and citizenship to its more than 640,000 K–12 students at over 900 schools.
"This award means so much to the education team at Common Sense, as it recognizes the value of our whole-community approach to preparing today's students to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in their digital lives," said Mike Lorion, general manager of Common Sense Education. "Earlier this spring, we helped LAUSD celebrate its first Digital Citizenship Week, which was an opportunity to shine a light on the students' preparedness to use technology to transform their learning. We continue to work with LAUSD as it engages educators, administrators, students, parents, and community leaders in embracing these 21st-century skills."
Building on the success of that first Digital Citizenship Week, Common Sense Education and the Common Core Technology Project team at LAUSD hosted the second Digital Citizenship Week in October, during national Digital Citizenship Week and Connected Educators Month. The celebrations featured a special "Student Voices, Student Choices" forum moderated by Pro Football Hall of Fame Defensive Back Ronnie Lott. The conversation allowed students to speak about the challenges and opportunities of growing up with today's powerful media and technology. Also, teachers pledged to teach five lessons from Common Sense's K–12 Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum on topics from cyberbullying and online privacy to digital footprints and creative credit and copyright.
Common Sense Education will accept The Better Together award at a gala event in Silicon Valley on November 21, 2014.
