NutriGold Applauds New Food Scoring System

NutriGold continues its advocacy for consumer best interests and education by applauding the new EWG Food Scores database.

Consumer demand has spoken and the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has answered the call. Earlier this month, the EWG introduced one of the most comprehensive online databases of food products. The database contains information on more than 80,000 items sold in groceries across the nation including details of ingredients and nutritional information as well as an attempt to assess how processed the food items are.

“We know that consumers care a lot about what’s in the foods they buy, and we also know that if foods are highly processed, that can have an impact on nutrition in ways that don’t always show up on the information panels on labels,” said Renée Sharp, the director of research at the EWG.

The Food Scores database is compiled largely from information supplied by food companies through voluntary and mandatory labeling, combined with the group’s own research on pesticides and additives, allows consumers to find a variety of product information. For example, a consumer can easily find out if a product contains brominated vegetable oil as an ingredient or whether a specific product contains added dyes and preservatives.

As the demand for transparency from food companies grows, NutriGold commends organizations like the EWG for their initiative. While debates continue to rage on topics such as the definition of the term “natural,” or GMO contamination in foods, companies like NutriGold and the EWG that provide the most transparency will ultimately be the most trusted by consumers.

“At NutriGold, we know that every time customers purchase one of our products, they are entrusting us with their most precious asset: their own health or the health of a loved one and this is not a responsibility we take lightly” states Priya Khan PhD, CEO of NutriGold. “We define ‘doing the right thing’ simply as doing what’s in the best interests of consumers, and making sure their interests are protected.”

The reason NutriGold pursues these goals is not just because it is objectively and morally the right thing to do, but because they believe that there are no circumstances under which it is acceptable for a company to squander its integrity in the pursuit of profitability.
