“Today I want to talk about how to use the blue note to spice up your pentatonic licks”, says Johnson. Claude demonstrates how to find the blue note in the key of A using the first position of the pentatonic scale as follows; 5th fret of the 6th string with first finger to the 8th fret with 4th finger, 5th fret of the 5th string with first finger to the 6th fret with 2nd finger, this is the blue note, to the 7th fret with 3rd finger, 5th fret of the 4th string with first finger to the 7th fret with 3rd finger, 5th fret of the 3rd string with first finger to the 7th fret with 3rd finger to the 8th fret with 4th finger, this is the 2nd blue note, 5th fret of the 2nd string with first finger to the 8th fret with 4th finger and 5th fret of the first string with first finger to the 8th fret with 4th finger. Johnson continues this easy guitar lesson by performing a bluesy lick based on the 3rd and 2nd strings that incorporates the blue note to spice it up. A Pentatonic Scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave and is very common and found all over the world.

The Blue Note is the fifth degree of the pentatonic scale lowered by one half step. It is a staple of the blues genre.
