America’s bathroom styles are shifting. Both national and local trends indicate that today’s homeowners are looking for a spa-like oasis with contemporary styling, accessible and easy to maintain.

“Spa master baths are now more desired environments and consumers are wanting a more contemporary style”, said Sergei Tsoy, President of Modern Style Construction.

As recently as a few years ago, traditional styling represented most of the bathrooms in the Washington, DC metro area. Traditional bathroom styling has dropped by 6% vs. contemporary styling.

Modern Style Construction’s Sergei Tsoy shares many local trends his firm is seeing in the Washington, DC metro area:

  • Beige and bone color schemes, with white fixtures and brushed nickel faucets continue to be the most popular choices. Like many others across the country, we’re seeing a shift towards gray.
  • We are also seeing an increased interest in universal design in both kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Freestanding soaking tubs have become more popular.
  • Washingtonians are opting for radiant floor heating in bathrooms.
  • Comfort-height toilets are also a popular option

Other Bathroom Features in Demand:

  • Ceramic or porcelain tile for flooring
  • Quartz for vanity tops
  • Linen storage cabinets
  • Undermount sinks
  • Wall-hung floating vanities, console tables and open shelving

“From what we’re seeing, homeowners are looking for clean lines and simpler designs,” adds Tsoy.
