“Today’s lesson is on arpeggios”, says Johnson, “for those of you that do not know what an arpeggio is, it’s simply the notes of a chord played separately”. Claude starts off by demonstrating an Am (A minor) chord in the open position and says that the notes are “A, C, and E”. Claude continues by performing a variety of ways to play the individual notes from the chord in different positions on the neck to demonstrate all of the possibilities of licks that can be created by using arpeggios. Johnson also demonstrates ways to add in other degrees of the major scale such as the seventh to get even more sounds and demonstrates licks that use the major scale as well as the minor pentatonic scale. An arpeggio is when the notes of a chord are played separately in a sequence. The word comes from the Italian word apeggiare which means “to play on a harp”.
The major scale, aka the Ionian Mode, is a seven tone diatonic scale that is widely used in western music. The eighth duplicates the first at double its frequency so that it is called a higher octave of the same note, which its name is derived from Latin "octavus", the eighth.
A Pentatonic Scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave and is very common and found all over the world.
