Inaugural O2 breathe Hearts PHor Hope Gala to Benefit Pulmonary Hypertension Association
Chicago, Ill. (PRWEB) November 04, 2014 -- The Midwest Chapter of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association(PHA) will host the inaugural O2 breathe Hearts PHor Hope Gala on Saturday, November 22, 2014, to raise money and awareness for pulmonary hypertension (PH) – a rare and debilitating disease of the lungs that affects the functioning of the heart and can lead to right heart failure. Without treatment, average survivability is only 2.8 years.
During the gala, Stuart Rich, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine, The University of Chicago Medicine, will be presented with the 2014 Heart PHor Hope Legacy Award. Dr. Rich is one of the country’s foremost experts on pulmonary heart disease and the spectrum of PH. His research has led to a greater understanding of all types of PH as well as many new treatments for the disease. Dr. Rich has also been listed among the country’s best doctors by Castle Connolly Ltd. and by Chicago magazine for more than 20 consecutive years. His research has been published in hundreds of clinical articles and book chapters on pulmonary heart disease. “With all that he has done for the PH community, it is our privilege to honor Dr. Rich at the inaugural Hearts PHor Hope Gala,” said Geoff Gephart, Executive Director of PHA’s Midwest Chapter.
The 2014 Hearts PHor Hope Gala will bring together the PH community to celebrate the accomplishments and advances made in the PH field, while honoring those who made these advances possible. This special evening will be emceed by CBS 2 Chicago reporter Dana Kozlov, who became involved with PHA after reporting on a local Chicago patient in 2013. The events of the evening will also include entertainment by comedian Ryan Sickler, a friend of PHA Board of Trustees member and caregiver, Steve Van Wormer. The event will feature an auction to raise awareness of PH, provide support, education, and fund research to ultimately find a cure.

About Pulmonary Hypertension
Simply defined, pulmonary hypertension, or PH, is high blood pressure in the lungs. It is a chronic and life-changing disease of the heart and lungs that can strike at any age and rapidly leads to heart failure if left untreated. People with PH experience shortness of breath, dizziness, loss of energy and other common symptoms. Diagnosis of PH often takes years, during which patients are often misdiagnosed. This is alarming considering half of the patients who do not receive the correct treatment survive only 2.8 years. By the time individuals are finally diagnosed, a majority of patients have reached the advanced stages of the disease.
