Clayton Homes recently served as host to a pair of German researchers who are studying manufactured housing as it relates to the prefabricated housing trend that is continuing to grow in popularity in Europe.

Christopher Hellmann and Maximilian Offizier, who are production researchers at Technische Universitat Munchen (Technical University of Munich), toured the Clayton Appalachia Home Building Facility in Andersonville, Tenn., to study the company’s best practices in building manufactured homes. Manufactured housing is a rising trend among European homebuyers, however, the infrastructure to build homes on a large scale is not yet commonly utilized.

“We are currently doing a research study about the prefabrication of houses in the U.S. and other countries at the Technical University in Munich,” Offizier said. “It was a pleasure to be able to visit what can be viewed as a benchmark company in the worldwide housing industry.”

As America’s largest homebuilder*, Clayton Homes is at the forefront of manufactured housing technology. From maintaining an efficient construction process to incorporating consumer design trends into their building methods, the company is one of the most advanced homebuilders in the nation.

As part of their research, Offizier and Hellmann looked at every aspect of the Clayton Homes process, from construction to shipment. The researchers studied the production methods, the energy-efficient features Clayton implements into their homes, the economies of scale achieved from bulk purchasing materials (e.g. carpet, insulation, etc.) and the consumer education for marketing purposes.

"We were honored that they chose to tour our facility,” said Kevin Clayton, CEO of Clayton Homes. “We were pleased to share with them the quality and detail that is built into a Clayton home from start to finish, and hope that this information will help shape the growing manufactured housing industry overseas.”
