Fairway Market Launches ‘A Turkey for Every Table’ Initiative
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 25, 2014 -- Fairway Market recently announced a company-wide campaign to help needy families during the holidays. The program, dubbed “A Turkey for Every Table,” will help poor families have full Thanksgiving meals this year.
The New York-based grocery retailer has committed to donating 6,000 turkeys and stuffing to local food banks, churches, community centers, social service agencies, food pantries and other organizations in the tri-state region.
The poverty rate is currently at 16 percent in New York, a higher rate than the national average. In New Jersey and Connecticut, poverty rates exceed 10 percent. Fairway Market is attempting to combat these high rates of poverty in the local community with their new “A Turkey for Every Table” program.
All 15 Fairway locations are taking part in the program, so customer throughout the region can join the company in this important effort. All Fairway stores will have point-of-purchase donations coupons at their registers. Customers can contribute either a dollar amount or the cost of a turkey and stuffing.
The goal of the program is to combine the efforts of Fairway customers to provide the resources for 2,000 turkey and stuffing donations to add the 4,000 which Fairway is donating, resulting in a total goal of 6,000 donations.
The holiday donation program was kicked off on “The Meredith Viera Show” where Fairway Market donated $15,000 worth of food to City Harvest, the leading food rescue organization in the country. The donation was made to coincide with National Food Day.
“Since 1998, City Harvest has enjoyed a strong partnership with Fairway Market, and collected close to 800,000 pounds of good food which we have delivered to our network of over 500 community food programs across the five boroughs,” said Jilly Stephens, executive director of City Harvest. “City Harvest appreciates this generous holiday donation, and Fairway Market’s point-of-purchase program, which help fill our trucks with food and increase awareness about hunger in our city.”
Fairway regularly donates to food banks and food rescue organizations and responds to area crises, such as Hurricane Sandy. After Hurricane Sandy hit, the company donated food, water and other items to local food banks, emergency relief shelters, soup kitchens and homeless shelters in the region.
“Fairway’s slogan ‘Like No Other Market’ extends far beyond the unparalleled selection of groceries, specialty foods, and organics on our shelves,” said CEO Jack Murphy. “We are committed to making a transformative impact in the communities in which our stores are located. This commitment has been part of our DNA for more than 80 years, and it will continue for 80 more years and beyond.”
