In September 2014, Water's Edge Dermatology announced that they had added a new skin cancer therapy to their practice. Electron Beam Radiotherapy is a new and exciting treatment that can serve as an effective alternative to more traditional surgical procedures. Water's Edge Dermatology is hopeful that this will improve the level of care and increase options for patients affected by the most common forms of skin cancer.

As its name suggests, Electron Beam Radiotherapy is a non-invasive form of particle based radiation therapy. However, this procedure does not cause the infamous side effects usually associated with other forms of radiation treatments, such as hair loss, nausea and fatigue. The treatment requires 2-3 minutes of care every day for 3-4 weeks, but is completely painless and can entirely erase and remove skin cancers without surgical scarring. This makes it a great option for people who develop skin cancers on their face, those who may be hesitant to undergo surgery, or people with recurrent cancers.

Dr. David Herold, a pioneer in skin cancer radiotherapy in South Florida for over 15 years, and Chief of Radiation Oncology at Water’s Edge Dermatology explained the reason why Water’s Edge Dermatology invested in this new treatment technique.

“At Water’s Edge Dermatology, we wanted to educate patients and give them a choice and control in their decisions and offer them surgery, or a completely non-invasive non-surgical approach. As far as I know, Water’s Edge Dermatology is the first comprehensive dermatology practice in Florida that offers its patients the option of in-house Electron Beam Radiotherapy as part of its own comprehensive program of services. This treatment allows many patients the choice to have a therapy that will not leave a surgical scar. The technology employs an electron beam, not a penetrating X-ray or highly dose radioactive source. It’s very superficial and easily tailored to a patient’s specific anatomy."

Like other skin cancer treatments, this procedure begins with a consultation with Dr. Herold, who has devoted his practice to focus upon skin cancers. At the time of consultation the patient will discuss their options with Dr. Herold and make up their own mind how to proceed. If they would like to have Electron Beam treatment they return for a planning session and then begin the treatments. The actual treatments take only two minutes each day and can be accomplished in as little as two weeks. The therapy will not disrupt a patient's daily activities.

While the treatment is still a recent addition to the practice, Dr. Herold reports that the procedure has quickly become a success.

"We’ve already begun treating patients from miles away and we’ve had excellent results, people really trust this method and patients are thrilled," said Dr. Herold.

For the moment, Water's Edge Dermatology only offers the procedure at their Okeechobee location. However, due to the results and demand they have already experienced, their goal is to expand their offerings to their other practice locations.
